All you need to know about Moto Guzzi

History of Moto Guzzi

Italian manufacturer Moto Guzzi was established in 1921 by Mandello del Lario and is best known for its historic role in motorcycle racing. The manufacturer also has a notable list of innovations to its name – including the first motorcycle stand, wind tunnel and eight-cylinder engine.

Moto Guzzi’s first engine design was a horizontal single that remained dominant – with a few configurations – for the first 45 years of the company’s life. Each of these engines bore the signature of the mechanic who built it.

Racing was how the Moto Guzzi name really took off, especially in the 1935 Isle of Man TT. Guzzi’s factory rider, Stanley Woods, landed a double victory with wins in both the Lightweight TT and the Senior TT.

Racing success for Moto Guzzi

The success continued and during the 1950s Moto Guzzi dominated the Grand Prix with five consecutive 350cc wins.

By the late 1950s, the brand had 3,329 official race wins, eight World Championships, six Constructor’s Championships and 11 Isle of Man TT victories to its name.

In 2004, Moto Guzzi was bought by Piaggio & C. SpA – Europe’s largest motorcycle manufacturer. Since then, Piaggio has continued to design and produce top-quality bikes.
