Everything you need to know about Adventure motorcycles

What makes Adventure motorcycles so much fun...

If you are a rider who wants to travel far and on both paved and unpaved roads, then an adventure or adventure touring motorcycle is for you.

A type of machine with various engine displacements, an adventure vehicle provides long range touring capabilities and makes it possible to travel to virtually all destinations.

These motorcycles are also used competitively in extreme rally events, including the punishing Dakar Rally.

BMW lays claim to being the pioneers in this motorbike segment with the production of its R80GS in 1980.

However, one can certainly argue that other current models such as the Honda CL450 Scrambler and even the Triumph Bonneville relate to earlier ancestors that had some of the characteristics of adventure vehicles.

The ability of adventure bikes to travel far and in rugged terrain come from their special construction.

Although they can have various engine displacements, common features in this type of vehicles include:

  • Heavy weight and large in size
  • Longer suspension of six or more inches
  • Increased fuel reserves of five to nine gallons
  • Side bags or panniers and a top case for storing luggage
  • Room for one or two passengers

There is a large selection of optional accessories that are made available for adventure bikes.  Some common extras include:

  • Skid plates to protect the engine and transmission while riding off-road
  • Larger or additional fuel tanks
  • GPS navigation systems
  • Windshields
  • Luggage

It is often said that adventure motorcycles can be grouped into the overall category of dual sport or enduro motorcycles.  Generally, dual sports are those powered by a 650cc or smaller single-cylinder engine, while adventure bikes typically feature a 650cc or larger (and usually) twin cylinder engine.

As adventure bikes are there to cover long distances in both on and off-road conditions, they are regularly fitted with hard metal parts as extra protection from rocks and other hard objects that could create damage.  These parts include skid plates, engine guards and hand guards.

Built to take the rider to virtually any destination imaginable, the advantage of having an adventure bike is the flexibility that comes with this type of machines.  With a wide range of accessories available, riders are also able to create a motorbike that perfectly meets their travelling needs.
