According to the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and the Building Cost Information Service, as much as 80% of all UK businesses are ‘underinsured’. Underinsurance can cause an insurer to apply the average clause in the event of a claim, meaning you’ll only receive that percentage of cover you purchased in relation to the actual real cost of replacement. As an example, if you declare your rebuild cost to be £1m and the real cost turns out to be £2m, that’s 50% underinsurance and therefore a 50% reduction to your original policy cover, you’ll only receive £500k. The chances of a business surviving a major catastrophe when underinsured are dramatically reduced.
