Yamaha XT660Z Tenere Bike Overview
A classic adventure bike with excellent off-road traits, the XT660Z Tenere offers great value for money. Okay, so long distance touring is not its forte, but it does come with attractive features like a towing hoop and sturdy crash panels.
The engine has been used in a number of other bikes – notably the XT660X and R series of bikes. The company has effectively addressed problem areas like a dodgy throttle and lack of power in the midrange.
As a result the bike acceleration is good and it also has good pulling power of up to 70 mph (considering it is a single cylinder). Vibrations tend to set in around the 5000 rpm mark.
Although the seating is high and the bike is heavy, its well spaced out bars and excellent balance make it a great bike to ride even for novice riders.
It is similar to other off-road bikes that have an issue with the forks diving upon sudden application of brakes at high speeds. Also the rear end tends to squat upon acceleration which makes it wide through turns. In an off-road scenario though, the bike is tough and can handle almost all kinds of conditions.
The engine has been tested across a wide variety of bikes and apart from a few fueling issues, the engine is robust and dependable. The company has worked considerably on the bike and made it as repairable as possible under Euro 3 strictures.

It’s a big high adventure bike with a 21 inch front wheel! Handle better than you might think though
It’s a big single, 48 bhp won’t scare you senseless but that’s not what it’s for.
This thing is amazing on fuel. 300+ miles per tank. 85mpg achievable. One plug, £3 for an oil filter. Doesn’t kill tyres in months. Perfect for the budget conscious.
Has lived outside for long periods with no major corrosion. 11 years old now, but cleans up well considering winter riding.
Big trailer is high up and dives on hard braking.
