Yamaha MT-07 Bike Overview
Yamaha’s MT range started back in 2005 with the MT-01, a curious cruiser-engined V-twin roadster, extending to the MT-03 660cc single-cylinder roadster in 2006. It went a bit quiet then until 2014 when the firm brought out the MT-09 triple followed by the MT-10 four and various other sporty roadsters.
Yamaha MT-07
Including this – the MT-07. First launched in 2014 alongside the MT-09, it used an all-new 689cc parallel twin engine in a standard naked roadster chassis, and was an instant hit amongst novice riders and folk looking for a simple, economic, fun middleweight.
The engine is its big strength, putting out impressive amounts of grunt, with around 74bhp peak power and a very direct feel to the conventional fuel injection throttle (rather than a ride-by-wire setup). It’s great on fuel when you’re bring sensible, and great on fun when you’re being silly, giving the best of both worlds. The brakes are also fab, using Yamaha’s excellent Sumitomo four-piston calipers and a fairly decent ABS setup.
Early models suffered from indifferent suspension performance, but the 2018 update brought extensive damping updates, putting the MT-07 on par with the best of the competition. And the latest version is a very sorted, capable little middleweight roadster, that’s spot-on for commuting and twisty back road fun.

Owner Reviews
Pros
Looks great and ergonomics are nice and relaxed. Linear power delivery and low down torque. Easy to ride and chuck around the twisty roads.
Cons
Seat could do with some extra padding, easily solved with an aftermarket unit if you so wish.

Comfortable for journey time approx 1 hour without stopping. Firm but comfortable seat and upright riding position you would expect from a naked bike.
High build quality as you would expect from a Japanese manufacturer.
Good braking performance. Budget components but adequate for the application and good value considering the price point of the bike.
Light weight and easy to ride (My first bike after getting my full license!). Budget suspension handles rough road surfaces well. Not top of the line ride quality but decent considering the price.
Good low down torque and linear power delivery - Perfect first big bike for a beginner rider.
Averaging 60mpg+ with varied routes (Town, A roads, dual carriageway, motorway).
Pros
Excellent for rides out with friends, easy to ride
Cons
Suspension can be a little poor if pushed

I'm 6ft2in and its a spot on comfortable seating position
If neglected it can rust in a few areas
Budget brakes but just about okay
Light but the suspension can be its week point
Just right , great amount of torque ...
Cheap to run
Pros
It is looking great, it has wow factor by look of it, but look of the bike is not everything.
Cons
It is only one man bike, for pillion is very limited and bad experience to to use.
For pillion is absouletely uncomfortable. The seat is so tiny and it only does the job to move someone in short distance. For longer rides alone one need to take alot breaks. I would say 1 hour in saddle is a maximum to be comfortable, then break is necessary. After one hour one focus more on pain than road which is dangerous...
Not broken down yet but is rusting very fast :(
I would say does the job, but combined with engine braking is great. You have to know your bike to use it properly and when you know what to expect and mix engine breaking and brakes together it is good stoping power. Newbies pull the clutch in and expect brakes to do the job. Engine braking and brakes together without touching a clutch is good.
It is light but for perfect cornering rear break need to be used a lot.
Low RPM torque is great for slow speed in the city and overating from slow speed to get to the traffic lights fast, but any car could easily over take you as this bike feels unstable at 65+ MPH on roads which allowes to.
If one is a "pig" and rev the engine high all the time it could be pricey. But when relaxed and listen the engine and obey the speed limits it could cost 100 miles no more than £6.
Pros
Consumption. nippy and lightweight. Aesthetics
Cons
Nothing

For the price it handles very week. Probably because it's so light
As a commuter it is perfect. Will do 70mpg if I'm careful but still pulls away nicely if required and the front wheel is easy to get up if you fancy it. (Not me of course though)
Achieves 70mpg if careful and 60 if I rag it about a bit
Still quite new but obvious signs of rust yet
No issues
Pros
The match of rideability and price is unbeatable! Absolutely passionate about this bike. Love getting on it every single day, it never lets me down.
Cons
The seat just hurts

It's quick!! But not stupid quick!! I'm not Guy Martin!! It makes a lovely noise especially with a decat exhaust
I get around 150 miles on vpower fuel!! That's pretty awesome for £12
Its solid!! Everything on it is top quality
It stops really well... I don't think the abs had kicked in yet as it hasn't needed to!!
Pros
The torque for sure, so much fun power.
Cons
The metals they use as the swing arm susts easily.

Ride quality is almost spot, could do with a better suspension to really stick to the corners.
Engine is superb plenty of torque and plenty of useable power.
Extremely fuel efficient with built in eco mode. Even with me pasting it I still get 150 miles to a tank.
For a budget bike it's built extremely well. No complaints.
Braking is very good with and that works spot on, but could always be a bit better, this could be solved with an upgrade.
Pros
Love the bike power is always just a touch away.
Cons
More wheelies

Lovely ride, feels tights and responsive through corner
Great power in the lower end can get a bit out of breath at higher speeds
Brakes could be better but more than sufficient for everyday riding
Never broken down, few niggles with small thug seat release more easily solved
Brakes as a weak point but more than sufficient at normal running speed, commuting etc. Plenty of grip never felt like I needed substanially more.
Pros
Great bike. FUN, FUN, FUN! If you can, grab one and enjoy the lightweight machine (200kg) with great performance and looks!
Cons
Small fuel tank
Read More
The seat is comfortable, due to the naked nature – it's okay up to 70mph, no stress. On the motorway, over 70mph you can feel the wind – but the seat is very comfortable for longer rides.
Oh boy, this is a great engine. Absolutely – it can do eco, can go along bigger biked with no stress.
Small fuel tank
Very good build quality, no leaks, strong plastics around the great CP3 engine. Nothing but honey.
Breaks are good. Not going to elaborate on this – when they are cold, they are not as bitey when cold, but they do the job well.
Pros
Yamaha have made an easily accessible bike for all ages and experiences. Fun to ride, cheap to run.
Cons
Build quality.

Lightweight bike, very flickable. Responds quickly to the smallest input.
Bike performance is great. Always want to pull. Extremely fun to ride.

It has broken down. A solanoid problem. Build quality leaves a little to be desired but you can forget about this with what you get for your money.
Pros
Light weight , easy to use and fugal , running cost low. CONS well rear fender not good at keeping rain and muck of back of rider, pillion seat a bit small for long trips > 100 ok after not so good
Cons
Rear mudguard and rear seat.

Poor rear suspension , ok for good road surface, but on bad surface suspension gamers ( Not Dangerous)
Nice power delivery, very fugal on fuel 62 mpg about 200 miles to the tank, good lighting, and option to fit aux power supply
Rear mudguard and rear seat.
For the price it's good, just be aware of paint flaking on swinging arm welds .( covered on warranty x2 yrs)
Front suspension dives under heavy breaking but stable

Pros
Yamaha hit the nail on the head with the MT-07 it's a lot of fun and it's not bank breaking in the process, Yes the 09 and MT-10 may be slightly father but the 07 was built for a purpose (to have fun) and it does it perfectly
Cons
Not a lot really

Smooth easy ride, corners like it's on rails and pull like a dream
Performance is great, lots of low end torque, it will pull a wheelie in 1st, 2nd + 3rd. Only downside is a little low on too end speed

Good brakes with ABS
Pros
great bike, covered 12000 in last year, not missed a beat. I use plenty of acf50 to keep it good. Looks great and its nimble through city traffic
Cons
suspension could be improved, but at cost of bike its good enough for the price. you can upgrade to fully adjustable but its no cheap.

very agile, upgraded to pilot road 3's. have more confidance now. smooth, loads of torq to blast away from all cars.
great torquey engine. performs so well.
suspension could be improved, but at cost of bike its good enough for the price.you can upgrade to fully adjustable but its no cheap.
some rust on steel nuts etc.. stone chips on wheels, (I will powdercoat to smooth the finish. these as they are very difficult to keep clean with the grain from molding) still all very good for a 6k bike!
average. could be better.
Pros
The reason I bought an mt07 is because of the upright bars as I've got short arms and the fact it sits relevantly low which boosts your confidence when riding, it's also light weight and pretty fast making it easy to handle throughout the corners.
Cons
It would of been great to have more adjustable suspension buy there are aftermarket parts I suppose.

The bike is very light weight and easy to manoeuvre in many situations. once you're used to the power output and torque of the motor you learn how to use it smoothly. the bike handles excellent for how basic it is built!
The engine puts out about 75bhp with overall has a brilliant top speed and is very quick off the line. it goes 0-60 in under 4 seconds and gets up to speed fast and smoothly and pulls well with your pillion passenger and luggage.
I put roughly £10 fuel in just over weekly and it gets me quite some miles! they do roughly 60mpg+ dependant on your riding style of course! but it is very economical and efficient!
My MT07 is 3 years old and has never broken down. no rust or corrosion to the body or engine. asking as the bike is well maintained it will surprise you how well they are built.
the braking is brilliant but the is room for improvement but it does the job. everything acts together well ; suspension, brakes, tyres. I have never experienced any loss of traction of any kind. my bike came with michelin pr3's and have lasted roughly 7k miles and have never let me down until a nail de-inflated one
Pros
The engine of course! It stands out above others in its class giving it the edge if you're looking for a fun commuter.
Cons
The suspension is shock-ing (excuse the pun).
Lovely and light feeling, flicking and filtering. Suspension leaves a lot to be desired. Expect the front end to plunge forward under medium/heavy front braking. Rear suspension will have you airborne if you hit a bump too fast.
The outstanding feature of the MT07! Punchy and torquey through most of the rev range. Its not as smooth as an inline 4 but who cares it's a twin! and if it had hands it would be giving everyone around it the finger every time you twist the throttle. Top speed isn't the game here its about how fun it is getting there.
I get 130 miles average to a tank of v-power, depending how much you keep it in the ECO rev range displayed on the dash. Servicing is every 6000 miles which should cover the average rider for a year.
Rust is a ever present threat. especially around the swing arm and rear shock. Needs a little more TLC than other bikes to keep it at bay. Riders seat bolt hole threaded after removing the seat a handful of times. Plastics and paint are of good quality.
Very average and as expected for the price point. They'll stop you well enough but they can only be described as basic. ABS is unobtrusive unless you grab a handful in an emergency.
Pros
It's a Tracer 700 what more can you say. I love my bike can never get the smile off my face when I start riding.
Cons
Better seat please Yamaha.

Very light and easy to get you knee down on corner and bring the bike straight back up with no hassle
I've got an A2 restriction so I never know its full potential but restricted wise excellent
Compare to my other bike I save around 500 pounds a year on fuel
I have a had absoulty no problems with my bike build quality is excellent
Would be a lot better with brembo brakes on them
Pros
Everything. Love it
Cons
Wind noise
Read More
Feels great. Light and agile
Loads of grunt
Typical Yamaha
Great feel and power
Pros
The noise after upgrading the exhaust for a system from sp engineering is amazing. The mt07 has a massive following with its own owners club on Facebook with helpful knowledgeable people and regular meets. One of the best bikes I ever rode. Even chopping and changing from my sv650s.
Cons
The build quality
Read More
The ride of the mt07 is good. But could benefit with having the suspension upgraded and different tyres than the oe spec Bridgestone battlax bt-023. The brakes are good out of box but over time you might want to invest in braided lines and new pads
For a 689cc parallel twin engine it's quite peppy. Has plenty of low down torque thanks to the cross plane crank. Could do with a remap if you change the exhaust for a full decat system
Since having the power commander and exhaust system fitted providing I ride sensibly I can squeeze 160 miles out of the 14 litre tank but if I ride like a tit, which is hard not to when you're on the mt07, I can maybe push 120 miles to the tank. Average using shell fuel, it costs £16 for a full tank of fuel. The 600 mile service cost £80 after the dealer gave me a deal on it, then the 6000 mile service was done by myself and cost £40 in parts for the yamalube oil, filter and sump plug washer.
The build quality isn't that great. The finish on some of the parts isn't the best, I have had to replace the water pump coolant pipes under warranty as they corroded even under regular cleaning through winter riding. Would also recommend replacing the standard hardware to stainless or probolt ones
The brakes are a yamaha own twin caliper twin piston axial mounted system on the front with a single caliper in the rear. From 2016 onwards the mt07 comes with abs as standard and under hard braking the abs kicks in but isn't an intrusive abs. My personal mt07 may need new pads soon as I have done close to 8000 miles and they're starting to lose their bite
Pros
So much fun to ride with great control
Cons
As the bike is naked you do get a bit of front wind
Read More
The bike is very nimble and easy to control, a great ride, smooth but kicks when you need it.
The bike can run easy when cruising but one flick of the throttle and it jumps into action
The tank isn't to large its about £10 to fill, and can be serviced for between £150 to £500 depending upon the garage
Great build quality and very reliable
Great brakes, the perforated front discs stop the bike rapidly and the rear is good for speed control
