KTM 990 Supermoto Bike Overview
If you’re after the most bonkers fun you can have on tarmac, then KTM’s 990 Supermoto has to be on your shortlist.
A touch more power than the earlier 950SM, and with various chassis and running gear upgrades, the 990 is definitely the model to go for.
There’s a shed-load of torque on tap, and the throttle response is clean, the big fuel-injected v-twin motor pulling cleanly from low down all the way to a frenetic top-end that will have you whooping in your crash helmet. It’s fair to say this bike is more than just a little naughty — resisting the temptation to wheelie everywhere and slide into and out of corners takes maturity and resolve… don’t say you weren’t warned…
Despite the obvious lack of fairing, the 990 Supermoto is pretty comfortable on long runs. Road handling is superb, with great feedback through the high-quality WP suspension and plenty of stopping power thanks to the fitment of Brembo brakes — arguably the best in the business.
If you can behave yourself, then the 990 Supermoto is a rewarding, smile-inducing plaything that will make each ride remind you why you got into motorcycles in the first place. If you’re slightly lacking in self-restraint, however, well, you might need to consider how much you need your licence…
Prices vary from around £3,200 to £7,000. Owners vary massively too — from the most careful and fastidious to those of a less than mechanically sympathetic nature, so choose carefully!
