Honda ST1100 Pan European Bike Overview
Die-hards will claim that the ST1100 Pan is the bike which put Honda on the biking map and it certainly appears to be the case that despite being launched in 1990, the ST1100 Pan European continues to be an incredibly popular touring bike. It’s V4 motor has plenty of low down grunt and will literally eat up miles and miles making it the ideal bike for long journeys; add in the large panniers, a comfortable seat, a five-speed gearbox and a bike that is surprisingly light despite it’s gigantic chassis and you have a bike which is an all-rounder and perfect for anyone thinking of taking a road trip across Europe.
Improvements have been made on early issues with the bike; Honda appear to have remedied the problem with corrosion on the swing arm and if you use the bike to its full capacity then you will find that it needs servicing on a fairly regular basis. That said, a bike which is well looked after will easily surpass expectation with experts in the industry advising that a well serviced bike with 150,000 miles on the clock is a better investment than a bike with low mileage and limited service history, which just goes to show the type of machine the ST1100 Pan really is.
The Pan has been on the market for so long that it makes sense for there to have been a number of updated models released. This means it is possible to pick up an earlier model for a bargain although it does pay to be aware of the issues mentioned above which were not remedied when the bike was first released.

Very comfortable for long and short journeys, no aches or pains.
Perfect from the start, reliable, trustworthy, fun.
Very confidante inspiring, linked braking system.
Very stable and planted on the road, confidence inspiring
V4 power is superb through-out the rev range, plenty of power on tap in any situation.
50mpg, tyres 5,000 a set, servicing simple and not expensive, like all motorcycles look after it and it will look after you.
Pros
It's a Pan.... Try one and you'll get the point!
Cons
If they'd kept making them after the early 1990s!

None better!
1999 and still going strong....
I'm told ABS is better.
It's a tourer not a sports bike but surprisingly good to ride for fun too
Plenty for me but being fair, sports bikes are faster.
For its size.... Exceptional.
Pros
this is a great touring bike that is comfortable for hours in the saddle and it gobbles up the miles.
Cons
higher windscreen for taller riders

Obviously doesn't corner like a sports bike, this is a tourer but very stable and does corner well.
The V4 engine is powerful with plenty of pulling power even 2 up
higher windscreen for taller riders
Only ever broken down with dead battery
The brakes are great for stopping a fairly heavy bike
Pros
A great all-rounder with an obvious touring bias.
Cons
Heavy in traffic but well balanced.

Fantastic. Great fun for both long journeys and short fun rides. Obviously, it's not a sports crotch rocket but it is very flexible! Heavy in traffic so not good for city rides.
Fast, good acceleration.
Heavy in traffic but well balanced.
Over-engineered! Lasts a lifetime and it totally bullet proof! Initial models had trouble with corrosion on the swing arm but this seems to have got better in the later models.
ABS/TCD system does a good job. Not as sharp as the modern sports bikes but still pull you up in double-quick time of required!
Pros
Honda reliability. Best bike ever Honda have struggled to find a worthy replacement.
Cons
Weight is a big issue for me, when wheels are turning its ok, but deadweight pushing is a nono.

Heavy bike but responsive
V4 strong performance given weight of bike, power there when needed.
Not too bad fuel runs about 45mpg, insurance is reasonable for bikes age and mine(68) Tax + insurance about £200 or just under, as I only do about 1k mileage per year fuel is not a major cost.
Typical big Honda built to last, still going strong
Good stopping power with abs and balanced brake system, performs well on Bridgestones.
Pros
Comfort
Cons
Ability to clean wind shield

60 mpg and parts readily available new and second hand.
Known multiplug problem easily fixed
Stops on a six pence
Pros
the comfort
Cons
could have done with panniers being a little slimmer, yes i know that would cut down on capacity, but for pillion passengers with shorter legs, it makes getting on a bit more difficult?

Very smooth, its a heavy bike, but it corners well, its just a great bike
it's a powerful bike, also have a CBR 1000, but i feel that the pan is the superior bike
like any large engined bike, it can get through the fuel, but generally speaking i feel it is cost effective, and the fuel costs are in line with every other bike i have had.
It has never broken down, there have been no problems
braking system is very good, very reactive.
Pros
It’s a legend

As smooth as it gets for anything with “Sport” I it’s DNA.
Torque over power makes easy touring. Fast enough when needed.
Do all the servicing yourself. It’s all easy.
It’s a Honda.
It’s a heavy bike.
