Honda ST1100 Pan European Bike Overview
Die-hards will claim that the ST1100 Pan is the bike which put Honda on the biking map and it certainly appears to be the case that despite being launched in 1990, the ST1100 Pan European continues to be an incredibly popular touring bike. It’s V4 motor has plenty of low down grunt and will literally eat up miles and miles making it the ideal bike for long journeys; add in the large panniers, a comfortable seat, a five-speed gearbox and a bike that is surprisingly light despite it’s gigantic chassis and you have a bike which is an all-rounder and perfect for anyone thinking of taking a road trip across Europe.
Improvements have been made on early issues with the bike; Honda appear to have remedied the problem with corrosion on the swing arm and if you use the bike to its full capacity then you will find that it needs servicing on a fairly regular basis. That said, a bike which is well looked after will easily surpass expectation with experts in the industry advising that a well serviced bike with 150,000 miles on the clock is a better investment than a bike with low mileage and limited service history, which just goes to show the type of machine the ST1100 Pan really is.
The Pan has been on the market for so long that it makes sense for there to have been a number of updated models released. This means it is possible to pick up an earlier model for a bargain although it does pay to be aware of the issues mentioned above which were not remedied when the bike was first released.

Fantastic. Great fun for both long journeys and short fun rides. Obviously, it's not a sports crotch rocket but it is very flexible! Heavy in traffic so not good for city rides.

Over-engineered! Lasts a lifetime and it totally bullet proof! Initial models had trouble with corrosion on the swing arm but this seems to have got better in the later models.
ABS/TCD system does a good job. Not as sharp as the modern sports bikes but still pull you up in double-quick time of required!

Heavy bike but responsive
V4 strong performance given weight of bike, power there when needed.
Not too bad fuel runs about 45mpg, insurance is reasonable for bikes age and mine(68) Tax + insurance about £200 or just under, as I only do about 1k mileage per year fuel is not a major cost.
Typical big Honda built to last, still going strong
Good stopping power with abs and balanced brake system, performs well on Bridgestones.

Very smooth, its a heavy bike, but it corners well, its just a great bike
it's a powerful bike, also have a CBR 1000, but i feel that the pan is the superior bike
like any large engined bike, it can get through the fuel, but generally speaking i feel it is cost effective, and the fuel costs are in line with every other bike i have had.
