 Step by step guide to making a home insurance claim

  • If necessary, such as in the event of a burglary, contact the police and obtain a Crime Reference Number
  • Gather your insurance documentation to refer to important details such as your Policy Number
  • Have the facts ready – with any details of loss / damage

With a home insurance claim you will often have to fill out a claim form and return it within a certain time frame. You’ll also have to provide proof of purchase for items that you’re claiming for, however if you can’t find receipts you could prove purchases by referring to your debit / credit card statements, you can request these from your bank for specific months. The more evidence you can provide the better.

Sometimes your insurer will send out a loss adjuster, who will visit your home to assess the damage or loss.

It’s important to remember that in the event of a small claim, you will have to pay your excesses and you could find your insurance will increase when you come to renew. So it’s always worth considering these factors before you make a small claim.
