Everything you need to know about the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, or the DGR as it’s more affectionately known, is an event run to support the Movember Foundation and to raise awareness on men’s mental and physical health, including focuses on prostate cancer. DGR was formed to get men to talk about their issues through something they’re passionate about – motorcycling. It’s not uncommon to suggest that motorcycling is a hobby enjoyed by predominately men so it made sense for the foundation to branch out.
All across the country, and the globe in fact, bikers take to their local street in a group ride out on the last Sunday on September every year. Riders are encouraged to adopt the Movember theme with growing moustaches and facial hair being a big hit, as well as riding classic or custom motorbikes whilst wearing your Sunday best – suits are optional but a bit of tweed always goes down a treat!
You can register online to find your local ride out or if there’s not one in your area then why not organise your own?!
Some local ride outs:
London: The Bike Shed, London organise their very own Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride every year, with the starting and ending point at the café with a great learner friendly route around London to see the sights. There’s over 600 riders registered to take part in the event in 2019.
Bristol: There’s usually over 300 riders from Bristol and surrounding areas that sign up for the DGR every year riding through Bristol city centre, with plenty of viewing points for spectators to cheer you in.
Derbyshire: Where better to take part in the Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride then the rolling countryside of Derbyshire, one of the most beautiful places to ride round anyway but why not do it for charity. This organised ride often draws a big crowd of bikers so make sure you get yourself registered!
Cambridge: See the glorious sites of Cambridge with this iconic ride out, and it always attracts a good few hundred local riders to the event as well. You’ll get chance to ride straight through the city centre as well.
Once you’ve signed up and registered to take part in your local ride, you’ll be provided with more accurate information on the lead up to the event, find out who else is riding with you and different ways you can raise money for the Movember Foundation.
