KTM 390 Duke Bike Overview
Looking for your first bike after passing your A2 licence? Take a look at the KTM 390 Duke. This light and nimble bike makes for great confidence building for a new rider; with a low seat height of 800mm, weighing in at under 200kg and fantastic ABS-assisted brakes.
Being restricted to the A2 licence holders, the bike only has 44bhp but there’s still plenty of fun to be had. Let’s not forget the awesome paint finish and overall build quality of the 390 Duke, it’s certainly one that catches the eye.
KTM released an updated version of the 390 Duke in 2017 which now features an engine that complies with Euro 4 regs that feature ride-by-wire and a bigger capacity fuel tank (now 13.4 litres). There’s lots of extras too, including a new 2-up seat, handlebars, ABS, 1290 Super Duke LED headlight and different riding modes.

This is my first bike so i have very little comparison. The bike is easy to ride, and good for flicking around in turns.
Considering the size of the engine it has a fair amount of poke, and is very easy to get along with at low speeds too.
The running cost of this bike, considering it's my first, is great. Economical and cheap to insure too.
Very well put together and solid.
The brakes are a little soft, with a bit too much play in the levers

Rides incredibly well. So light and that makes it easy to flick in and out of corners. It’s smooth for a single cylinder.
As an A2 rider, it’s incredible. Feels more powerful than what it is. Power delivery is quick and has an aggressive dirt bike like sound.
It has a small tank so trips the petrol station are frequent. For me it’s every week if I’m using it every day. I can comfortably get ~140 miles from a tank. Seems to drink oil a lot too. I find myself topping that up every 3-4 weeks. Tax isn’t too terrible.
Never broken down yet, the only “big” issue I have is sometimes when I blip the throttle when I’m stopped the engine cuts out. Also the clock on the dash never keeps the correct time! It uses Bybre brakes which are a subsidiary of Brembo, so they’re pretty good for a light bike. There’s room for improvement but I’ve never needed that little bit more.
Pros
Light, easy to ride, don't have to go crazy speeds to have fun on it (I use to own a R1 btw). Practical.

Super light and turns incredibly easy, builds up your confidents very quickly in the bends. Good torque and grunt out of the bends, lots of fun to be had. Runs out of revs quickly on the straights but isn't really made for that, super easy to control in city traffic.
Loads of torque, punchy out of the bends, runs out of revs quickly, vibrates a lot at the top end, can cruise all day (60mph) no issues, enough grunt for steady overtaking.
Servicing cheep (from my dealer), insurance cheep (for me) fuel depends where you buy it from but I get about 170 miles from £15.
Personally never had any issues with mine, LCD dash does slightly mist up in cold and wet conditions (common fault) build quality generally good, few budget parts to keep the price down ie sprocket and levers. Comes with good tyres at this price point.
Front brake plenty powerful, abs brakes front and rear with braided hoses out of the factory, only marked down slightly as the rear brake lever is very poorly positioned and I struggle to get enough pressure through it to operate the rear brake effectively.
